The formula
Every result on this site reduces to the same three steps:
- Area — length × width in feet (for a circle: π × radius²).
- Cubic feet — area × depth, with the depth converted from inches to feet (÷ 12).
- Cubic yards — cubic feet ÷ 27, because a yard is 3 feet in every direction.
Worked example: a 12 × 15 ft area at 4 inches is 180 ft² × 0.333 ft = 60 ft³, and 60 ÷ 27 = 2.22 yd³. Suppliers usually round deliveries to the quarter yard, so you would order 2.25 yd³.
