Convert any length to linear feet, price a run, and count boards — the simplest measurement in the building aisle, minus the confusion.
A linear foot measures length only — a 10-ft board is 10 linear feet whatever its width. For area-priced materials, use the flooring or tile calculators instead.
Linear vs square vs cubic
The three units answer different questions. Linear feet measure a length — trim, fence line, countertop edge. Square feet measure a surface — flooring, tile, walls. Cubic feet and yards measure volume — mulch, soil, gravel, concrete. If a price seems absurdly good, check which unit it’s attached to.
Materials sold by the linear foot assume a standard width; the price already reflects it. That’s why a 6-inch and an 8-inch baseboard have different per-linear-foot prices for the same length of wall.
