About Crocodilian
Fast, transparent calculators for landscaping and building materials. No accounts, no tracking of your inputs — everything is worked out in your browser.
The formulas
Every calculator on the site reduces to the same geometry:
- Area (ft²) = length × width (circle: π × radius²)
- Volume (ft³) = area × depth in feet (inches ÷ 12)
- Cubic yards = ft³ ÷ 27 · one yd³ covers 324 ft² at 1 inch
- Tons = yd³ × density (lb/yd³) ÷ 2,000 — always shown with the published range
- Bags, tiles, pavers = volume or area ÷ the unit’s size, rounded up, plus any waste allowance
Where the numbers come from
Geometry needs no citation, but material constants do. Nothing on this site is copied from another calculator; every density, bag yield, coverage figure, and installation depth traces to a manufacturer data sheet, industry institute specification, university extension, or government table:
- QUIKRETE Concrete Mix technical data sheet (TDS No. 1101)Concrete bag yields (40 lb → 0.30 ft³ … 80 lb → 0.60 ft³), ~140 lb/ft³ unit weight, 2-inch minimum pour.
- ICPI Tech Spec No. 10 — Application Guide for Interlocking Concrete PavementsPaver base depths (walks 4–6 in, driveways 6–8 in), 1-inch bedding sand, paver thickness and joint widths.
- CUSTOM Building Products — Polyblend Plus coverage charts (TDS-360 sanded, TDS-369 non-sanded)Grout coverage tables; our grout formula is calibrated to reproduce these published charts.
- University of Minnesota Extension — Mulching for soil and garden healthMulch depth guidance (2–4 inches) and the mulch-free ring at tree trunks.
- LA County Public Works — Converting from Volume to Weight (CIWMB factors)Soil 2,025–2,106 lb/yd³; stone or gravel 2,632.5 lb/yd³.
- Weights of Various Construction Materials (classic construction chart)Earth loose vs packed (1,890–2,592 lb/yd³), gravel 2,970, crushed stone 2,700, sand 2,619–3,186.
Analytics and cookies
The calculators run entirely in your browser: the dimensions and prices you type are never sent to a server, stored, or included in any analytics.
Separately, we use Google Analytics to see which calculators people use, and it only runs if you accept the cookie prompt. Decline and no analytics cookies are set and nothing is requested from Google at all — the site works identically either way. You can change your mind at any time using the “Cookie settings” link in the footer. We also use a cookieless visitor count from Ahrefs, which sets no cookies and identifies no one.
What this site does not do
- It does not give structural or engineering advice. Slab thickness, base design for vehicle loads, drainage, and compaction specs belong to local code and professionals.
- It does not pretend precision it doesn’t have. Weights are shown as published ranges because moisture changes them; mulch gets no tons figure at all.
- It does not sell materials or take referral fees from suppliers.
- It does not store or transmit the numbers you enter.
