Flooring sells by the full box, so the cost line prices whole boxes when a box size is set. Complex rooms and diagonal installs warrant the higher waste setting.

Real-world quantities vary with moisture, compaction, cuts, and site conditions. These calculators use standard formulas and published constants (see the About page for sources); order with a sensible allowance and confirm with your supplier or contractor.

Boxes are the unit that matters

Flooring sells by the box, and coverage per box is printed on the label — typically somewhere in the 15–30 ft² range depending on plank size. The practical order is therefore: area, plus waste, divided by box coverage, rounded up to whole boxes. The calculator prices whole boxes for the same reason.

Keep a leftover box after the install. Floors get damaged plank by plank, and a matching spare from the same production batch is the difference between a ten-minute fix and refinishing a room.
